The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the second Sunday of each month from 9:15 to 10:15 am in the Infant Jesus rectory library. Members knit and/or crochet shawls and discuss ways in which the ministry can be useful. New members are always welcome. If you have interest in joining the committee but Sunday morning does not work with your schedule, please contact Pam Morin at 603-548-0049. If there is enough interest, we may also offer an evening meeting each month.
Not a knitter/crocheter?
Join us and learn! We have members who are willing to teach you and provide guidance along the way. Or consider donating money or supplies. We appreciate donations for yarn, and we occasionally need to purchase medals which are attached to the shawls. If you’d like to donate yarn, please keep in mind that it should be:
- machine washable and pleasant to the touch
- non-allergenic fibers (no wool)
- enough yardage in the same dye lot to complete a shawl (see below)
Here are some of our favorite, commonly used yarns. Generally 545 yards are required for shawls that are knitted and 740 yards for crochet patterns.
- Lion Brand Homespun
- Charisma by Loops and Threads
- Barcelona by Loops and Threads
- Parfait by Premier Yarns
- Bernat: Boucle, Mirage or Illusions
- Red Heart: Baby Clouds and Light-n-Lofty
If you have smaller amounts of soft yarn, we will accept those as well. Often we can combine yarns to create a beautiful shawl.
If you are a Knitter/Crocheter but can’t attend meetings?
We gratefully accept donation of completed shawls. Here are a few guidelines for creating shawls at home.
- begin with a prayer and work with intention
- work in 3s to represent the Holy Trinity (see prayer and patterns below)
- use appropriate yarn; non-allergenic fibers, washable, pleasant to the touch
- rectangular shape, 20” – 24” wide, 60” long so they can also be used as a blanket.
- freshly washed and dried prior to donation
Attached are instructions with patterns and prayers.
